Celebrating Christmas with a group

Would you like to have a gluten-free meal at a restaurant that is quite familiar with this? Come to Gys, with two locations in Utrecht (Voorstraat & Amsterdamsestraatweg). At Gys, you can enjoy 100% organic, plant-based, and gluten-free food! Do you have a gluten intolerance, allergy, or celiac disease? Keep reading!

At Gys, all the dishes on our menu are essentially gluten-free, except for the ones that include bread. These dishes are served with organic sourdough bread that contains gluten. However, the toppings on these dishes are gluten-free. We can also prepare these dishes gluten-free by using gluten-free bread for those who can tolerate traces of gluten.

The main difference between a gluten-free and non-gluten-free dish is the bread. Unfortunately, because we use non-gluten-free bread in our kitchen, we cannot claim to have a completely allergen-free kitchen. There is a possibility of traces of gluten in the dishes, as our non-gluten-free bread is baked in the same oven as other ingredients. (Our gluten-free bread is no longer baked in the same oven as our sourdough bread.)

At Gys, we prioritize the safety of our guests' dining experience. That's why we are open and transparent about the preparation of our dishes, allowing guests with intolerances, allergies, or celiac disease to make informed decisions about what they can or cannot eat.

For people with celiac disease or those who cannot consume products from an oven where non-gluten-free bread is baked, we have options on the menu that we label as "safer choices." None of the ingredients for these options go into the oven during prep. They include a selection of fried snacks (we do not fry anything that is not gluten-free), cold dishes such as the caprese del giardino, thai coconut soup, and main courses such as the Italian with a twist.

At Gys, we take every allergy or illness seriously and make every effort to prepare safe dishes. We adhere to hygienic measures such as handwashing, using clean utensils, and sanitizing the kitchen counter. However, despite our efforts, we cannot guarantee that our dishes are 100% free from traces of gluten.

Christmas Eve is all about coziness and being together, and what better way to celebrate than with a delicious dinner in a warm atmosphere. Our chefs have happily compiled a Christmas menu that is not only tasty but also responsible. The entire menu is completely vegan, organic, and gluten-free! 🌟

The festive dishes for this five-course menu are composed of seasonal products, carefully chosen from local, organic suppliers. 

This is the Christmas menu that our chefs will prepare for you on Christmas Eve:

✨Stewed cabbage, pipian sauce, ceviche, seaweed, lovage emulsion

✨Stewed and smoked celeriac, potato and leek beurre blanc, chive emulsion, fennel

✨Smashed king oyster mushroom, black salsify, eggplant mayo, wasabina, cauliflower cream, shallot

✨Poached pear, white wine, fennel crumble, balsamic and blood orange coulis, pear sorbet, and hazelnut praline 

We serve this five-course menu for €49.50 per person and it is completely organic, gluten-free, and plant-based.

For many years now, Gys has been one of the favourite places for larger groups to come and have lunch, dinner or just a casual drink.

You can visit us for breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner. Gys can be found at two locations, of which our location at the 

 in Utrecht is ideal for groups. This location is within walking distance from Utrecht Central Station (ten minutes). For guests who do not come by public transport, there is always plenty of parking available on the Amsterdamsestraatweg and the side streets of the restaurant (free on Sundays, for a small fee the rest of the week). This Gys location is spacious with space inside for long tables where everyone can chat with each other as much as possible. But this restaurant is also nice to visit when the weather is good! This Gys has a green spacious terrace where you can enjoy the sun with a large group!

At Gys we do not have separate small-group menus with only a few things to choose from. If you come to dinner with a group, you can choose the same dishes as when you visit us as a couple. We love giving our guests the choice to order everything from the menu because by doing this, there is always something for everyone to like!  We do offer special group arrangements to choose from.

Besides that you can come to us for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, it is also possible to enjoy a high tea with a group. Are you the one who’s in charge of cooking Christmas brunch/lunch/dinner this year? Are you planning to show off and put an extensive 10-course dinner on the table or do you prefer to keep it simple? Whatever your plan for Christmas, a light soup is always a hit between all the dishes. One of our chefs has written down his all-time favourite Christmas soup recipe, parsnip-truffle soup! Oh, and a few colleagues were already able to taste the soup and let's say, they all were a big fan!

. This is made using different fermented products and the tree roots from areas where truffles grow.

What do you need for the parsnip-truffle soup:

How do you make the parsnip-truffle soup:

Peel the parsnips with a vegetable peeler and cut off the top and bottom.

Save the skins, we can save these for making garnishes later.

Cut the parsnip into large pieces and place in a pan with the water, rice cream, bouillon cubes, dried porcini, onion, garlic and thyme.

Bring to a boil and then reduce to a gentle heat until the parsnips are fully cooked, about 25 minutes.

Now blend everything in a blender (for the creamiest result) or with a hand blender to an even smooth soup. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

For the duxelles: if you have a food processor: cut the mushrooms into coarse pieces and pulse them together with the garlic and thyme until a coarse paste forms in which the structure of the mushrooms can just be seen.

If you don't have a food processor, chop the mushrooms completely by hand until you get the same texture.

Then put a frying pan on the fire with nothing in it. When it is hot you can put the duxelles in the pan.

Bake this until all the moisture has completely evaporated. The duxelles is now ready, optional: deglaze the mushrooms with 125ml white wine.

Now heat up a deep fryer to 140 degrees and fry the trimmings of the parsnips until they are crispy, about 6 minutes. Then let them drain over kitchen paper and season with salt. (if you don't have a fryer, you can also rub the trimmings of the parsnips with some oil and bake in the oven at 150 degrees until crispy)

Set the deep fryer to 175 degrees and fry the sage leaves briefly, about 30 seconds, until they are dark green. (if you don't have a fryer, you can also bake the sage leaves in a pan with some oil until they are dark green)

Before serving; choose a deep bowl and place a large tablespoon of the mushroom duxelles in the center of the plate. Now spoon the soup around it so that the duxelles are just above the soup. Now garnish the soup around the duxelles with the parsnip chips, fried sage and truffle oil! For an example: see the photo below!

For lunch enthusiasts, we have two new additions to our menu: Shakshuka and Kofte. Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish consisting of a spicy tomato sauce with peppers, onions, and herbs, in which eggs are poached (can be made vegan, of course). It's a heartwarming dish that is perfect for a flavorful and nutritious lunch. On the other hand, Kofte is deliciously spiced and plant-based, served with a flavorful pea-mint dip.

If you visit us around snack time, you can enjoy new snacks like the Sea snacks! This unique dish is made from shitake coated in our special blend of herbs and spices. The result is a surprisingly crispy and flavorful snack that is perfect for sharing with friends or enjoying on your own.

For the main courses, we also have a variety of new flavour explosions, including the Italian with a twist and Dutch Delight. Crispy Beet Polenta is a crispy polenta made from red beets, served with creamy celeriac cream, Swiss chard, and a quinoa crisp. It offers a perfect balance of textures and flavours that will delight your senses. Dutch Delight pays tribute to Dutch cuisine with a twist. Creamy grain risotto is combined with red and white chicory, a silky carrot jus, and a bay leaf-walnut crumble. The dish is finished with caramelized onion, leek-onion butter, and a touch of dill for extra refinement.

And let's not forget our new desserts! From a chocolate-packed treat to a tasty dessert with pineapple and rhum! As the cherry on top, we also have a new cake on our menu: the apple almond pie!

We've thought about that when creating our new kids' menu. Whether you're looking for a tasty lunch or a surprising dinner, we have something delicious on the menu for every moment of the day.

During lunch, for example, kids can indulge in our 'Super Pancakes,' delightfully fluffy with a topping of fresh fruit. Or how about the 'Rainbow Sandwich'? A slice of bread with vegetable spread and cheerful cherry tomatoes. And let's not forget our 'Cookie Monster's Breakfast' - a bowl filled with yogurt, strawberries, bananas, coconut, and a crispy cookie crumble.

When it's dinner time, it's a real celebration! Our 'Simply Delicious Meatballs' are a hit! Tasty vegetable balls with carrots, a refreshing salad, and a super tasty green sauce. At Gys, we serve many cups of coffee per day. Not only for our guests, but our colleagues are also big coffee lovers! Do you know what kind of coffee we serve? We are sure you won't taste the coffee at Gys anywhere else in Utrecht or the surrounding area. Our organic coffee is roasted especially for us. It is a unique coffee blend, with a remarkable story! And we are proud of it! Our Gys coffee is a blend of 50% Colombian and 50% Guatemalan beans.

The Colombian coffee beans come from the Asociación de Mujeres Cafetera Plan Mil, an organization that advocates for women in the coffee industry. Many of these women are single mothers who came to the Serranía del Perijá sub-region of Colombia as refugees. Thanks to the association and its partners, these women are now specialized coffee farmers who use advanced agricultural and processing methods to produce this excellent fully washed coffee.

The Guatemalan coffee beans in the blend come from the Asociación Civil Comercializadora Maya Alternativa (COMAL), an organization known for its dedication to gender equality in coffee production. Nearly half of COMAL's members are women, and the cooperative has established various programs to support female producers. This fully washed, Fairtrade, and organic coffee comes from the programs set up by COMAL and offers a delightful flavour with notes of chocolate, berries, and citrus.

You can taste this unique coffee blend at our locations on Voorstraat and Amsterdamsestraatweg in Utrecht, served just the way you like it.
